Belknap Landscape

Spring 2011 Newsletter

Spring seems to have brought along improvements in the confidence local municipalities, businesses and residents have in their properties and in Belknap Landscape. We are operating at full steam, with a significant pipeline of landscape design and construction projects as well as an ever-growing landscape maintenance workload.

In this issue on Landscapes for Living, expect an update on Belknap Landscape's design-build activities, including a couple Lakes Region landscape transformations, one at a public park and another at a local healthcare facility. These are examples of how we turn Dreamscapes into Landscapes at Belknap Landscape!

See also the series of short articles with news relative to plantings on your property. Take a look at the benefits of and proper methods of mulching in an article supplied by BLC's Thomas Stern. You may be surprised to learn that proper mowing heights can significantly benefit the health of your lawn, and save you money in the process.

Included are opportunities to save significantly on Waterfront Permitting Services and on Tree Care, so be sure to save those Certificates! Choose our Waterfront Permitting Services Savings Certificate and/or the BLC Tree Services Discount, including the crane and crew.

Though we have had tropical rains of late, we all know it won't last through the summer season. BLC's Irrigation Division is ready for your irrigation start-up requests, pump checks, lawn zone coverage and to program a schedule on the irrigation controller. Further, should you need design and installation to protect your landscape investment, you'll find none more qualified than our own Gerry DuBreuil.

Our commitment to the local environment is shown in our ongoing business practices and in an unequaled effort to foster environmental education for area youth. Please see what we accomplished, as a courtesy to the community, during Earth Week at multiple public places, most involving local students.

We encourage you to share these landscape tips by using the links to pass Landscapes for Living on to family & friends. If this issue of Landscapes for Living was forwarded to you from another, be sure to sign up for future issues - we included the link just below!

Thank you for your continued faith in us and for your business.

Lakes Region Landscape Transformations
We turn Dreamscapes into Landscapes

Click to see a historical perspective by Mary Rose Boswell
THE RIVERWALK Through Downtown Laconia

A Municipal Transformation

The Lakes Region Association, a group dedicated to fostering tourism in the Lakes Region has a terrific description of The Riverwalk, a part of which is the newly landscaped Stewart Park at the doorway to downtown Laconia. The Riverwalk, a solid black line on the map to the right, is a 1 mile walk. A shorter route, the dotted line, bottom right on the map, is a .3-mile walk from City Hall and the Historic Belknap Mill around - or through - Stewart Park and over the footbridge, back to the Mill. Many properties along the way are listed on the National Historic Register.

Stewart Park, flanked by Union Avenue and the Winnipesaukee River, according to local historian Mary Rose Boswell (a member of the State Historical Resources Council) was once the site of stores and factories, followed by hosiery mills. The park was dedicated in 1973, named after Paul Stewart, who chaired the Laconia Housing and Redevelopment Authority which  controls the city's Urban Renewal projects.

Stewart Park, before the Belknap Landscape transformation
Stewart Park, before the Belknap Landcape transformation...

The park's benches, trash receptacles, water fountain, the fencing along the river were all in a state of disrepair. Invasive plantings thrived throughout the park. The street lights had not worked for years and the park had little appeal.

Belknap Landscape submitted and won a sealed bid for the Stewart Park restoration, winning the bid based on a comprehensive design supplied by our in-house landscape design team, full site work and construction capabilities and because BLC has all landcare services under one roof - including irrigation and landscape lighting. No other bidder - no other Lakes Region landscape company provides such all-inclusive landcare service capabilities.

Rebuilt underground utilities and water supplies provide the safety of new lighting and protect the city's plants and turf from drought. New walkways, comfortable, strategically placed seating, striking planting beds, native plant selections, restored turf and pruned trees create a mid-town oasis for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. All accomplished by Belknap Landscape crews in time for Memorial Day weekend and for a planned June 9th ribbon cutting ceremony.

A Commercial Transformation

"Progression", one of Genesis Healthcare's ShortStay Rehabilitation programs, offers therapy and treatment after you leave the hospital but, before you return home. In May, Genesis showcased the new "Progression" Transitional Care Unit at 175 Blueberry Lane in Laconia. Before the open House, Genesis selected Belknap Landscape to create an appealing, functional landscape serviced by an efficient irrigation system.

Attendees at the Open House saw how Belknap Landscape, in coordination with local Landscape Architect Tim Jordan, designed and built a functional landscape, transforming a blank pallet into a beautiful outdoor living space.

In this case, different walkway surface textures were installed to help patients learn to navigate after injuries affecting their ability to walk. The interior courtyard was totally enclosed so, much of the material had to be lifted in - by the BLC crane, no less!

BLC Works To Reduce Polluted Stormwater Runoff...
Stormwater Runoff Pollutes Our Waters

Our commitment to the local environment is shown in our ongoing business practices and in an unequaled effort to foster environmental education for area youth. Please see what we accomplished, as a courtesy to the community, during Earth Week at multiple public places, most involving local students.

We know that Belknap Landscape's actions and specifications have directly impact your property, adjoining properties and especially riverways, streams, ponds and lakes - that our everyday actions affect the most valuable resource in our Region - that of the water quality.

Belknap Landscape is at the cutting edge on environmental practices. We adhere carefully to the Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act and all State Pesticide Application rules. We specialize in and recommend the use of native plantings, recycle job-site organic materials in to loam, use only phosphate-free fertilizers, practice single steam recycling at all our construction yards and offices and coordinate efforts to inform area contractors and area residents about alternative, eco-friendly products.  These efforts are unmatched by any other Lakes Region landscape company.

Regarding the latter, we have been consistently beating the drum for reducing polluted stormwater runoff. This is evidenced by the recent coordination of speakers at the Lakes Region Chapter of the NH Builders and Remodelers Association. These speakers came from companies providing products that allow natural filtration of stormwater. As stormwater seeps through the porous asphalt, concrete or pavers, it is filtered of pollutants like sediment, heavy metals and petroleum products. No other Lakes Region landscape company lifts a finger to solve these issues.

Our efforts struck a chord throughout the waterfront neighborhood surrounding Rust Pond, in Wolfeboro where some Association members have concerns about sediments entering the pond - as a direct result of stormwater run-off.

We have subsequently been invited to call on property owners who requested more information on solutions to reduce sediments and pollutants, as a direct result of this very article.

You may not know how much Belknap Landscape is committed to environmental education of area youth. For years Belknap Landscape has supported the NH LAKES Association, a statewide, nonprofit, member-supported organization dedicated to protecting New Hampshire's lakes. Specifically, we sponsor and provide advice, trucks and tools to the Association's "Lake Conservation Corps", a summer youth employment program focused on improving our water quality, one waterfront project at a time. Recently, NH Lakes posted a commemorative sign at Laconia's Messer Street boat ramp, where Belknap Landscape teamed (last summer) with the Corps students to reduce polluting stormwater runoff by planting a buffer strip of plantings.

Topping last years effort, this past Earth Week, as a part of an annual, nationwide "Day of Service" orchestrated by the Professional Landcare Network (known as PLANET), we accomplished four environmental enhancement/environmental education efforts with area youth.

Included were:

      • A spring clean-up and play sand & playground wood chips replacement at Lakes Region Child Care play ground in Laconia
      • Courtesy ornamental Pear tree pruning at Laconia's Rotary Park
      • The coordination of 64 students from the Winnisquam Agricultural Center in clean-up and trail maintenance at Tilton's 55-acre Buffalo Park
      • We finished with a presentation by BLC Owner Hayden McLaughlin explaining our environmentally friendly practices, along with the business of landscaping to 21 attending student FFA member

Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting
There are few things quite as pleasing as an artfully illuminated landscape, but it can be a surprising challenge to make it relatively natural. Sure, you want a little drama, but you don't want pathways that look like landing strips and annoying glare coming from every tree. That's where experience and training provide much more value than a box 'o lights. Lighting should never be intrusive to you, your family or your neighbors and the experts at BLC are specially trained in the artistry of subtle lighting for your landscape. In this spirit, BLC is proud to support the International Dark Sky Association....

This is the perfect time to schedule a system review, the time to make fixture aim adjustments, bulb exchanges for the proper effect, as well as checking thoroughly for any damage from this past winter or from rodents . We'll also check for other hazards like blind spots and exposed wiring.

if your present landscape lighting does not do your landscaping investment justice, please let us provide a no-obligation review and propose a low voltage lighting design for your home or business.

Irrigation - Lake-fed or City Water Systems
Irrigation system start-ups are scheduled in time for maximum impact for the growing season. Don't let recent extended rainy days fool you - dryer days are ahead. Irrigation systems both protect and enhance your landscape investments, if calibrated properly by professionals.
1-stop for landcare needs - that's BLC!
Irrigation sytems by Belknap Landscape

Let us go through a comprehensive system start-up, checking the water supply, pump operation, verifying proper distribution at each zone, making adjustments as needed to rotors, sprays, and any drip systems, too. BLC technicians will program the irrigation controller for the growing season. We follow, at your option, with monitoring each month to adjust the controller as Mother Nature alters wet and dry conditions.

Irrigation and Change of Seasons
As spring rolls on and seasons change, we must not forget that plants, trees and lawns require different levels of watering throughout the growing season.

In the spring, much of the watering needs come naturally with rains, given that precipitation stays true to the season. At this time, lawn and bed zones can go with low to moderate watering and less often. Rain and moisture sensors, installed by BLC Irrigation Techs, help to avoid over watering.

As summer approaches, watering times can be increased to daily schedules with longer run times to offset sun exposure and drought. Some planting bed watering provided by drip irrigation systems can remain on a two or three day schedule with increases in the run times to allow for some drying of root systems, maintaining plant health.

Of course when fall arrives, watering can be cut back as plantings prepare themselves for winter. At this time, BLC Techs shift to light watering for the lawn and adjust to a short, bi-daily watering schedule for fall plantings.

At Belknap Landscape Company, all of the above irrigation schedule changes can be taken care of automatically with a monthly irrigation monitoring program. Our Technicians always strive to protect the health of your landscape.

Mulching Around Trees
Best Practices...
Thomas Stern - BLC's Mauget Certified Tree Care Specialist
Thomas Stern - BLC's Mauget Certified Tree Care Specialist

BLC 's Thomas Stern, who wears a number of turf, plant and tree care hats here at Belknap Landscape, provided some mulching tips worth noting...

Mulch dresses out your landscape, providing unity among different planting beds. If you need weed suppression and want to conserve soil moisture, mulch is a great solution. Mulch also keeps the roots cooler in summer heat and protects root systems from temperature extremes during winter freezes.

While many different materials may be used as mulch, we recommend natural looking brown hardwood mulch and offer reds and blacks, as clients direct. All are attractive and will allow air and water penetration into the root zone, if they are applied in the proper amounts and maintained in the correct manner.

At the UNH Cooperative Extension Website, in a mulching article by Melinda Wright, Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and Tree Steward, Wright warns us about "Mulch Volcanos", the all too common practice of loading heavy mulch piles around the trunks of one of the most valuable landscape assets - our trees.

Mulch Volcanoes

Too Much Mulch Affects Plant Health!
Too Much Mulch!

Beware of an all too common practice - excessive loads of mulch around the base of plants. Mulch should not be touching the trunk. At left the trunk flare is not visible. Note the discoloration on the stem just below the mulch line. This discoloration may develop into disease and decay as the bark at the tree flare decays - as it is buried in mulch!

Some trees may develop girdling roots under the mulch pile and some trees have shallow roots, especially maples. If Mulch Volcanoes are piled around the trunk, the roots tend to grow into it then grow around the trunk in the mulch, eventually "girdling"  and choking the trunk.

Belknap Landscape is a member of the Tree Care Industry Association with Certified Tree Care Safety Professionals on staff. One of the benefits of professional associations is advice - advice that we can pass on to to our clients...

Trees love mulch rings

Mulches help maintain a uniform soil temperature. A 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch can add to the aesthetic value of a garden while protecting the base of trees from being injured by equipment, such as lawn mowers. Mulch rings also decrease competition from lawn grass. Lawn grass, especially when lush, robs trees of valuable nutrients and moisture.
Mulch no more than 3 to 4 inches!
Mulch no more than 3 to 4 inches!

Mulch rings should not cover the bark of the tree trunk. Many organic materials can be used as a mulch. Bark mulches and wood chips are the two most commonly used mulches in most of the country.

Mulch can be applied just about any time of the year when trees and shrubs are being planted. The best time, however, to apply mulch in established bed areas would be in mid-spring when the soil temperature has warmed up enough for sufficient root growth. If applied earlier, the mulch will keep the soil temperature lower and root growth could be delayed. The Tree Care Industry Association also recommends keeping mulch pulled a few inches back from the tree trunk, consistent with Melinda Wright's advice.

Most arborists consider organic mulches as the most compatible with trees. There are, however, several inorganic materials used as mulches. These include weed barriers. Black plastic is sometimes used to discourage weeds, however it interferes with the normal oxygen and water supply to the tree's roots. When the plastic is used, a very shallow root system is created and during drought periods the plants may not withstand the stress.

There are, however, several landscape fabric "mulches" available that will function the same as plastic, but allow for normal water and oxygen exchange. These materials, sometimes called geotextiles or weed barriers, are placed on bare soil around trees and shrubs with mulches used on top. There are many brands and types of materials from which to choose. They have proven to be beneficial in discouraging weeds and conserving soil moisture.

In addition to leaf area, a direct relationship exists between the height of the turf grass and the depth and total mass of the root system. Research with Kentucky bluegrass has shown that root growth was more than twice as great when the grass was mowed at a 2.0-inch height verses a 0.75-inch height. In general, a lawn mowed too short will have a shallow root system with little total root mass. The impact of shallow, weak root systems is most apparent during summer stress periods. When soil moisture becomes limiting, the closely mowed lawns usually exhibit stress first and the loss of turf grass plants is more likely. Higher mowing heights during the summer period will keep soil temperatures cooler, preserve soil moisture and help maintain turf grass quality. Recommended mowing heights of cool season turf grasses cultured in New England climates include:
