The Bulb Planting Crew

Dear Hayden,

I wanted to take just a minute of your time to let you know how grateful we are for the event held at Weeks Cemetery this past weekend. Taking on the task of planting 1000 daffodil bulbs, at first, sounded overwhelming. With Dale Squires help, we were able to organize and prepare for the planting, and we were quite surprised at how smoothly and quickly the actual work went. I think you have many hardworking and wonderful employees, who come together with teamwork to accomplish their goals. I see them throughout town, be it the Library, or the Church, and other locations. They do a wonderful job and this past Saturday was no exception. I must mention..his humor and smile during that morning, helped make people feel both comfortable and welcome. The people who volunteered to work had smiles and were laughing..and that, to me, is indeed valuable because although the work was fast pace and not extremely easy, fun was had by all. We anxiously await the display come spring, and as we make our way through the upcoming winter season, knowing what is in store..just months away, will definitely be a motivation.

Thank-You, and please pass on our sincere Thanks to Dale & team members who helped us complete this project!

Sincerely, Dee

Gilford Public Works

NH Landscape Association Joins SnowCare for Troops Movement to Support Local Military Families this Snow Season

Laconia, NH (November 22, 2011) - The New Hampshire Landscape Association (NHLA) has joined ranks with Project EverGreen’s SnowCare for Troops program or SCFT. SCFT is a new community-based program to provide free snow removal services for military families with a spouse or family member currently deployed in the Armed Forces. The NHLA will participate with snowplow and landscape professionals from across the country that donate their services and time to ease the burden on military families seeking help on the home front. SnowCare for Troops is a national program underwritten by BOSS Snowplow.

“We’re proud to support the SnowCare for Troops program and lend a hand to help our local military families who already carry so much on their shoulders, the last thing they should be worrying about is digging out after the next snowstorm,” said Dale Squires of Belknap Landscape Company, a NHLA Member and participating SCFT service provider. “This is just one small way that we can say thank you for their dedication to country and military service.”

Before the snow flies again this season the NHLA is urging both interested NHLA member and non-member snow removal companies to sign-up and asking military families to register for participation in the SnowCare for Troops program by filling out a simple on-line form on the Project EverGreen website at www.projectevergreen.com/scft. Alternatively, either snow service suppliers or military families may call toll free at 1-888-611-2956.

Snow service companies review properties of military families with deployed family members and decide whether or not to provide courtesy snow removal services. Generally, the courtesy plowing services must be on established snowplow routes to assure best service for all customers. Snow service providers and Military families alike have a direct contact for assistance with Joy Westenberg, GreenCare for Troops/SnowCare for Troops Manager via telephone at 888-611-2956 or by email at joywestenberg@projectevergreen.com

The SnowCare for Troops program joins the five-year program, GreenCare for Troops, managed by Project EverGreen, that has already provided free lawn and landscape services to thousands of military families. This program now has more than 12,000 military families in its database and is supported by nearly 3,400 green industry professionals and volunteers.

The NHLA website, www.nhlaonline.org provides the public with convenient access to members who share a common interest and love of landscape design, construction and maintenance, providing quality, Green Industry goods and services. Besides information about the organization, the public can access individual members, to learn more about what they have to offer and how they might work together. (end)

Local Cemetery Restoration Continues with Volunteer Landscape Enhancements

Laconia, NH (November 11, 2011) – At the historic Weeks Cemetery on the corner of Hoyt Road and Belknap Mountain Road in Gilford, Department of Public Works (DPW) employees and Cemetery Trustees have been working at restoration efforts since 2009. The hill-top cemetery, previously all but hidden from view by brush and overgrowth has now been revealed.

Complementing the landscape improvements was the installation of a beautiful a wrought iron gate, graciously donated by local blacksmith Susan LeachRay Haidaichuk. Now the Cemetery Trustees, lead by Chairperson Trustees Susan Leach, (right) have ordered daffodil bulbs to beautify the property. Trustees are happily accepting donations in any amount to help defray the cost of the bulbs and asking for volunteer planters to come help on Saturday November 19th.

The project, supported in general by the Gilford Rotary Club and the Opechee garden Club, plants 1,000 tulip bulbs along the face of the hillside, where a narrow carriage path for hauling caskets up the steep slope may now be seen and used to walk up the hill.

For corporate support and to rally volunteers, Gilford’s Belknap Landscape Company Inc. (BLC) came to mind first due to the recent coordination of a volunteer tulip planting effort at Laconia’s Stewart Park. BLC enlisted the support of neighboring Appletree Nursery in Winnisquam, who supplied the daffodil bulbs at their cost. “We choose Grade A Premium Bulbs for this project” said Appletree Owner Dave Rotonelli, “There is a nice variety of colors, growing at various heights”.

Belknap’s Dale Squires added, “Next spring and every spring thereafter that hillside will explode with early season color as we choose four daffodil styles. The Carlton, a tall, two-tone yellow daffodil, Ice Follies, large, silvery white flowers, one of the strongest-growing daffodils and great for naturalizing, the Tahiti, double flower of soft yellow and coppery orange whose large blooms stand like torches on strong stems and Jetfire, golden yellow flowers with narrow terra cotta-orange cups, a small but prolific daffodil.” Adding, ”These would be terrific choices for any property owner in our climate."

Volunteers are encouraged to participate by meeting at the newly restored Weeks Cemetery at the corner of Belknap Mountain Road and Hoyt Road on Saturday November 19th, 9:00AM. Spectators are welcome and volunteers asked to meet at the Belknap Landscape tent in the parking lot overlook for coffee and instructions before the digging begins. If volunteers have a battery-powered drill and an digging auger, planting will go that much quicker. Several augers will be on hand. Local companies team up on landscape improvement efforts

Caring Team
Volunteers pause for a break during the landscape improvement project undertaken by Belknap Landscape
Company and the Laconia Area Community Land Trust as part of the United Way’s Day of Caring Sept. 9.

LACONIA — Belknap Landscape Company Inc. (BLC) specializes in solving problems in Lakes Region landscapes. Laconia Area Community Land Trust (LACLT) is an experienced and accomplished non-profit developer of permanently affordable family housing. Together, facilitated by the annual United Way Day of Caring event, the two organizations created a safer, more pleasing landscape for the residents of Laconia's
Millview Apartments.

The Sept. 9 community wide event included more than 200 volunteers at locations all over Belknap County. A residential workforce housing landscape transformation At 117 Union Ave. in Laconia, across the recently BLC-revitalized Stewart Park and the Winnipesaukee River, is the Millview Apartment Complex, with four one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units in two buildings. These two buildings contain eight of the 18 total Millview Apartments, and are constructed on the former Vernitron property, donated by the City of Laconia. Beautiful views of Stewart Park, the river and the mountains to the north can be seen from some of the apartments. The apartments are conveniently located within walking distance from downtown.

The two organizations agreed on a list of land care improvements to make the property more appealing for the residents and safe for anyone who walks on the property. Additionally, severe stormwater runoff problems, causing the front lawn to wash out and unsafe conditions at one of the exterior stairways, were solved. On Sept. 9, the morning of the United Way’s Day of Caring, the day started with a nutritious breakfast at the Sacred Heart Hall, courtesy of Larry Poliquin, General Manger of the Gilford Hannaford Supermarket. Belknap Landscape crews did not stay for the opening remarks from the organizers, going straight to work at the Millview property. Volunteers Chris Mathews, Dale Squires, Duane Ordway, Mark Smith, Rhonda Blackey and Steve Huckins excavated the washed out area, installed fabric and BLC-donated heavy stone to fix washout problem, moving the excess materials to the washed out the embankment along the stairway on the west side of the building. Power trimmers were used to prune five-year-old overgrown foundation plantings, but the invasive species, including some incredibly huge and tough bamboo had to be pulled, dug and chopped out by hand. BLC's "Mulch Mule,” a dump-truck sized vehicle with a conveyor belt down the center came in handy for hauling heavy stone to the jobsite and for hauling tree limbs, shrub cuttings, and that bamboo back to the BLC construction yard for composting. BLC Marketing Manager Dale Squires commented,“The Laconia Area Community Land Trust and accomplished phenomenal things for our community.”“Belknap Landscape is happy to support their ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing, and proud of what these volunteers accomplished for the residents in just a day’s work,” he added.“We are so grateful to Belknap Landscape for solving our landscape problems at Millview and improving the property’s curb appeal; they did an incredible job,” said Nancy McCurry, LACLT Deputy Director. LACLT, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a member of NeighborWorks® America and is supported in part by membership donations and the Lakes Region United Way. Belmont, NH (June 2011) - NeighborWorks America is the country’s preeminent leader in affordable housing and community development. During the first week of June each year, NeighborWorks America and its network of local nonprofit organizations connect with families across the nation to celebrate and beautify local communities in an effort dubbed National NeighborWorks Week. There are a number of Lakes Region NeighborWorks Week projects planned where local NeighborWorks organizations mobilize volunteers, businesspeople, neighbors, friends, and local and national elected and civic leaders in a week of neighborhood change and awareness. Opportunities to get involved may be found at www.nw.org.

For Belknap Landscape’s part, the company’s NeighborWorks project became taking an active role in the improvement of a Lakes Region Child Care Service (LRCC) playground. LRCC is dedicated to providing high quality childcare, which is affordable for families who live or work in the greater Laconia area. This year the Belmont Early Learning Center at 14 Mill Street in Belmont, NH received a facelift from a joint effort by volunteer parents, LRCC staff and with material & labor contributions from both Belknap Landscape Company (BLC) and Pike Industries.

BLC employees coordinated efforts for the improvements, which included building new planting beds within the playground, planting BLC-donated drought resistant plant selections and spreading an enormous load of play sand donated and delivered by Pike Industries. The children will also learn how to grow their own vegetables in the new garden area in the center of the playground. Outside the playground fence BLC crews planted wildflower seeds.

"Hello Hayden,

Thank you Thank you Thank you!  The mulch showed up as promised yesterday and we had students manning all the tools your driver brought.  He was a great help with instruction as well and the place looks great.  We get so many complements on the courtyard.  I let everyone know how instrumental Belknap Landscape Co has been (and continues to be) in making the courtyard a nicer place.

Best regards, Polly Rouhan"
